Receipts: The One O’Clock Appointment. The Treasury Sale, Who Lends, and the Four Numbers With a Date Next to Each. (Tuesday, October 20, 2026)
The paperwork behind Tuesday night’s video, on YouTube and TikTok. Recorded Tuesday night, October 20, the evening before the 20-year bond sale and eight days before the Fed’s decision. Every number said on camera is in the tables below with the time it was true and the document it came from. Where a figure comes from a wire, a data vendor or a trade publication rather than the official record, it says so.
The sale, and who shows up to lend
| What I said | The record | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday at 1:00, the government has to borrow money for 20 years. | The Treasury’s tentative auction schedule lists a 20-year bond reopening announced Thursday October 15, auctioned Wednesday October 21, settling Friday October 23. Bids close at 1:00 PM Eastern. The reopening size is $13 billion, as listed by the auction calendar vendor. | U.S. Treasury, Tentative Auction Schedule (PDF); 500metrics auction schedule (vendor) |
| Three afternoons a week, at 1:00 Eastern, it holds a sale and whoever lends the money at the lowest interest wins. The schedule was printed in August. | Note and bond auctions close at 1:00 PM Eastern on the dates in the tentative schedule, which the Treasury publishes at each quarterly refunding; the most recent refunding announcement was August 5, 2026. Bills are auctioned at 11:30 AM; the 1:00 PM sales are the notes, bonds and TIPS. Competitive bids are accepted from the lowest yield upward until the offering is covered. | TreasuryDirect, How auctions work; Treasury Quarterly Refunding Statement, August 5, 2026 |
| About two dozen big banks who have to. They signed a deal with the government: show up to every sale and put in an offer, or lose the seat. | Primary dealers are the firms the Federal Reserve Bank of New York trades with; a condition of the designation is to participate consistently and in reasonable size in all Treasury auctions. The list has roughly two dozen firms; the count changes as firms are added or removed. | Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Primary Dealers |
| Then foreign governments. Pension funds, the retirement money of teachers and firemen. Insurance companies. | Auction results report competitive bids in three classes: primary dealers, direct bidders (institutions bidding for their own account, such as pensions and insurers) and indirect bidders (bids placed through a dealer or the Fed, where foreign official accounts show up). | TreasuryDirect, Auction announcements, data and results |
| At the 5-year sale on September 23rd, foreign governments took their smallest share since 2020. The two dozen banks who have to be there got stuck holding more of it than they have in over a year, and the government had to pay the most interest on a 5-year IOU since 2006. | The $70 billion 5-year note auction of September 23, 2026 stopped at 5.033 percent, the highest 5-year auction yield since June 2006, with a 3.1 basis point tail. Indirect bidders took 54.31 percent, the smallest share since March 2020. Primary dealers took 15.8 percent, the most since May 2024. Bid-to-cover was 2.21, the weakest since December 2018. | TFTC, 5-year note auction results (vendor); GlobalCapital, September 23, 2026 |

That’s the red bar at 1:01. | Auction results are released by the Treasury within minutes of the 1:00 PM close and flashed by the wires; the mechanism described is the comparison of a stock’s yield against the new risk-free rate. No specific 1:01 print from a past sale is claimed in the video. | TreasuryDirect, auction results |

The calendar

| Wednesday at 1:00, the 20-year. The Treasury discontinued the 20-year bond in 1986 and reintroduced it in May 2020. | Investing.com, “US economic calendar preview, week of October 19 to 23, 2026” (named, not linked); TreasuryDirect, Treasury bonds |

| A week from Wednesday, the 28th, at 2:00, the Fed sets the price of money, and at 2:30 the chairman explains himself. Not one person at the Fed has been allowed to say a word in public since Saturday. | The FOMC meets October 27 and 28, 2026; the statement is released at 2:00 PM Eastern with the press conference at 2:30 PM. At the September 15 and 16 meeting the Committee raised the target range by a quarter point to 3.75 to 4.00 percent, the first increase in over three years. Clarifications, owned
- “Foreign governments took their smallest share since 2020” refers to the indirect-bidder share at the September 23 sale. Indirect bidders include foreign central banks and other investors who bid through a dealer; the category is not only foreign governments.
- “About two dozen banks” is the New York Fed’s primary dealer list, whose count changes over time. The obligation is to participate in every auction, which the video calls “show up or lose the seat.”
- “The 10-year is 5.12 tonight” is a vendor index close, not the Treasury’s official par yield curve for October 20, which posts the next business day.
- “Gold around 4,150” is the December futures contract late Tuesday; Monday’s official settle was 4,160.1 and Tuesday’s official settle was not yet posted. “Three days down” is as reported by the wires that evening.
- “Oil is 101 tonight” is the November contract on its last day; the December contract, which became the front month, settled at 97.82. Both are above the October 4 number.
- “The news comes out at 4:00” is shorthand. Wires flash the auction result within minutes of 1:00; the point of the line is that the price bar prints before any write-up does.
- “Give me ten minutes” was the opening line; the video runs about eight.
- Where the automatic transcript of the tape differs from the script (“the government asked to borrow” for “has to borrow,” “the batting market” for “the betting market,” “a straight” for “a strait”), the script wording is what was meant, and the tape is left as spoken.
- The CME pages, the SEC filing and the two Investing.com pieces are named rather than linked because those pages refuse automated link checks.
- No line, trigger or exit is given anywhere in the video. The first-bar observation is a way of reading a sale after the fact, not a trade.
