Oil went down four percent
November WTI fell from Friday’s official settlement of 96.08 to about 92.37, a drop of 3.9% (3.8% on Reuters’ 92.47). The expiring October contract settled 95.78, down 4.5%.
Two tankers got hit over there today. Two crew members with minor injuries. Both ships kept sailing
UK Maritime Trade Operations, the Royal Navy office that tracks merchant shipping, reported a tanker on an inbound transit of the Strait of Hormuz struck by an “unknown projectile” (two crew with minor injuries, continuing under its own power) and, in a later report, an outbound LPG tanker hit by debris (crew safe, continuing to its next port).
About four times as much oil getting out as last month, as reported by Reuters
“Satellite data indicated Saudi oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz averaged 2.9 million barrels per day over the past six days, up from just 700,000 bpd in August.” That is Saudi oil specifically. The same report: Aramco loaded about 14 million barrels on seven supertankers on Sunday.
The president said over the weekend he’d probably be open to sitting down with their president
Sunday, September 20, in a phone interview on Fox: he would “probably be open” to meeting Iran’s president at the UN this week. The New York Times reported he called off planned strikes on the Houthis at midday Sunday to give diplomacy time; that report was carried by Axios and Fox.
The old month stops trading Tuesday. The new month is three dollars cheaper
The October contract’s last trading day is Tuesday, September 22. October settled 95.78 and November about 92.37 on Monday, a gap of about $3.40.

Oil’s down about eight percent in a week. About half of that gets to the pump in two weeks
November WTI closed 100.75 on Tuesday, September 15, and about 92.37 on Monday: down 8.3%. EIA: about half of a crude price change passes through to retail gasoline within two weeks, about 80% within four.
Best day in seven weeks. The Nasdaq closed at a record
S&P 500 up 1.49% to 7,764.70, the largest gain since August 4 (up 1.79%), seven weeks earlier. Nasdaq Composite 27,122.09, up 2.26%, above its prior record close of 27,093.90 on June 2.

The banks
What I said
The record

The big banks went up half as much as the market. The small banks went down
KBW Bank Index up 0.78% (178.78 to 180.17) against the S&P’s 1.49%. KBW Regional Banking Index down 0.57% (140.13 to 139.34). The bank funds XLF and KRE were not used for the day’s move because the quarterly SPDR ex-dividend date fell on September 21, which understates the price change.
Yahoo Finance (^BKX, ^KRX)
The ten-year fell to 4.96. The two-year didn’t move at all. So the gap got smaller
Treasury’s official rows: two-year 4.76 on both Friday and Monday; ten-year 5.01 to 4.96. Ten-year minus two-year: 0.41 on September 4, 0.25 on Friday, 0.20 on Monday.

One of the Fed bosses said today, quote, the only way to bring inflation down is to raise rates. And then, quote, it’s going to be painful
Austan Goolsbee, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, in London on September 21. Prepared text: “The only way to bring inflation down is to raise rates and narrow the gap between supply and demand.” To reporters: “It’s going to be painful.” He is not a voting member of the rate-setting committee this year.
The number that shows whether loans are going bad got better today, not worse
ICE BofA US Corporate Index option-adjusted spread: 0.80 on September 14 and 15, 0.78 on September 16 and 17, 0.77 on September 18 (the latest reading posted when I recorded; Monday’s value posts the next morning). Tighter means lenders are demanding less extra for corporate risk.
Indirect bidders, the big outside money, took sixty-six percent last time
66.01% at the August 25 auction. Treasury defines an indirect bidder as a customer bidding through a dealer; that includes foreign central banks and big domestic funds.
TreasuryDirect auction results
The last three of these sales, no tail. Last month that sale went off at about 4.2 percent. Right now the two-year is 4.76
June, July and August 2-year auctions each priced below the market rate at the deadline (a “stop-through”), by 0.3, 0.5 and 0.4 hundredths of a percent as reported. August high yield 4.204%. Treasury’s official 2-year on September 21: 4.76.

One correction to something I’ve said before
Sunday night’s video said that if something hits a tanker, oil goes for the top line. On Monday two tankers were reported hit in the strait and oil fell four percent, because the ships kept sailing and more Saudi barrels are getting out than at any point since the war started. The sharper version, which Monday’s video uses from now on: it’s not whether something gets hit, it’s whether the barrels stop.
